Great letter. As schools we are dealing with this 'lie' every day. Worse than children lying about their ages to set up Facebook is parents buying Call to Duty Black Ops for their Grade 5 children - tantamount to parents lying for their children!

I liked you comment that it is essential "for schools to partner with parents". Our School eventually did this by working with parents to set up a website to keep them informed of the latest issues effecting the safety and digital citizenship of the online lives of their children.

It was gratefully received www.iCyberSafe.com and it has created a dialogue between teachers and parents as well as opening conversations between children and parents.

Yours gratefully,

"Second, schools need to talk with kids about digital citizenship." Yes, and I hope that's starting to happen.

It certainly is scary these days. Kids have all kinds of new ways to get into trouble. Parenting just got a lot more complicated. Good post.

Kids can definitely learn from the Alexander Wallace YouTube incident. Instead of making social media seem negative with this incident, students can learn from it and be taught how to use social media positively and be aware of just how powerful social media is. As a student assistant for DML Central, we explore how digital media can be used to further education. So, I think this assignment where students can discuss the incident and learn about the power of technology is very helpful in stimulating their minds in so many aspects.

Great post Matt! I really enjoy reading about teachers teaching digital citzenship rather than taking the easier way out and banning social media. Our parents (we are in Melboourne, Australia) recently asked our school to support them in managing their children’s online behaviour. We put together a website and our focus is on Digitial responsibility, footprint and reputation. It’s open to all.
I’ll pass some of your ideas onto my parents if that's okay.

I will be teaching 'Technology in Education' next semester and plan on using the 'From Fear to Facebook' book in my class. The question I have is, are there other sources that you recommend to supplement your material. I am planning on using 'Toys to Tools' by Liz Colb as well as another ISTE text which I just forgot the name of (about implementing Google applications in a school environment). Basically I am looking to approach the class material from a very modern 21st century method so that the information that my students get can both be used by them in the future and be useful to add to a resume.

Any suggestions are appreciated!
